Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation "Nothing great is easy", Captain Matthew Webb

Frank Richards

With great sadness we have learned that our first CS&PF President, Frank Richards, has died at the age of 91.

Frank observed more than 280 Channel swims crossings over a 31-year career of authenticating English Channel swims – thought to be the greatest number by one observer. He was known and remembered with great affection by swimmers throughout the world. His widow, Margaret, has asked us to let everybody know.

Frank was inducted in  to the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 2004 as an Honor Administrator.

He is the namesake for the Frank Richards Endurance Award, an annual award for the CS&PF endurance swim of the year across the English Channel.

He will be missed.

There is no further information at the moment about funeral arrangements.

A message from our CS&PF President Mike Oram and his wife Angela

Frank was a good friend with a great personality who we have had the pleasure to know and work alongside for the past 35 years. He and his wife Margret were CS&PF founder members who supported the CS&PF from day one. He was a well known and loved member of the Channel swimming fraternity and a spent many years observing both CSA and CS&PF swims. He will be sadly missed, but lovingly remembered, by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
